God Centered Alphabet – C Is For Cross

The cross may have been a sign of great defeat cruelty and death at that time but for Jesus, it was a sign of redemption.

Hebrews 12:1-3 LSB

Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, laying aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary, fainting in heart.

We run the race before us because we have a Perfect Savior. He has authored our spiritual life and has prepared the course before us. We were running headstrong on a path to sinful destruction but Jesus Christ put us on the path to righteousness and holiness. We are fully justified by faith in the sight of God because of the righteousness of Christ.

C Is For Cross

There is no other word I would want to use for the letter “C.” You can’t separate Jesus from the cross and you can’t separate the cross from Jesus.

He is the Eternal God.

He is the Creator.

He is the Atonement for sin.

He is the Righteous Son Of God.

He is the Perfector of Saints.

He is the Perfect Savior.

I could go on and on and on and on and on. John in his gospel states that if you told everything that one could tell about Jesus’ activities all the books in the world could not contain the content.

On the cross of Calvary, God laid down His life. On the cross of Calvary, Jesus gave Himself in our place. Without the cross, without the shed blood of Christ, there is no forgiveness of sins.

Fixing our eyes – to turn our focus away from everything else so that we can be fully focused on one person or object. It is turning our focus on Jesus to the exclusion of anything or anyone that is not Jesus.

Endured – remained steadfast, persevered. He remained under the load of everything the cross was literally and what it represented. The cross does not define who Jesus is but it is what He chose to endure for us.

Despising the shame – to look down on with scorn in an insulting way. Jesus did not consider the shame from being crucified as comparable to what He was to accomplish in giving His life. He had come to redeem His people from their sins and nothing would thwart His mission.

Jesus not only endured the cross but endured great hostility from His creation. He had to hold up under great opposition and cruelty from those who would not have breath in their lungs without Him. Imagine loving your people so much that you would endure the greatest murder in the history of the world.

The cross may have been a sign of great defeat cruelty and death at that time but for Jesus, it was a sign of redemption. On the cross of Calvary, I was redeemed by my Perfect Savior. On the cross of Calvary, all those who repent and believe were redeemed by their Perfect Savior.
