Daily Bites Of God’s Word – Part 18 – Psalm 119:18

Just as we need daily food to sustain us physically, we also need daily food from God’s Word to sustain us spiritually.

Psalm 119:18 LSB

18 Open my eyes, that I may behold
Wonderful things from Your law.

Those who are unregenerate and unsaved do not have the capacity to properly understand God’s Word. To understand God’s Word and worship God properly, one must worship in spirit and in truth. This requires a spirit that has been raised to life in Christ. When one is a child of God, the Holy Spirit works to open our eyes and reveal increasing amounts of truth to us through the study and application of God’s Word.

Word Study

Open – To uncover, reveal, or bring to light.

Behold – To look, to consider, to perceive.

Wonderful Things – Extraordinary, wonderful, marvelous, amazing. Beyond that which is considered to be ordinary.

There is no end to the depth of wonderful things to learn from Scripture. As we mature in Christ and grow in our understanding of Scripture, we will begin to have our eyes opened to deeper truths. I refer to these as “Holy Spirit” lightbulb moments when the Spirit works through our study of Scripture to uncover what was previously unseen. This is not some Gnostic “special knowledge.” This is available to all saints who work on studying and applying God’s Word because they love it.

Applying This Daily Bite

  1. When was the last time the Spirit uncovered something for you when studying His Word?
  2. How has your appreciation for the consistency and harmony of God’s Word grown over time?
  3. Do you thank the Spirit for His illumination of Scripture in your life?

Praying This Daily Bite

Holy Spirit, thank you for guiding me into all truth as I study Scripture. You raised my spirit to life in Christ and sealed me for redemption. It is because of You that I can worship in spirit and truth. I can study Your Word, understand it, and apply it by Your power.
