Daily Bites Of God’s Word – Part 19 – Psalm 119:19

Just as we need daily food to sustain us physically, we also need daily food from God’s Word to sustain us spiritually.

Psalm 119:19 LSB

19 I am a sojourner in the earth;
Do not hide Your commandments from me.

The Christian life can certainly make us feel like a sojourner (temporary resident) in this world. In some senses, we are. When we die, we will be present with the Lord and leave this earth. Living and walking in holiness will alienate one from many groups. That much is certain. Anyone who has ever taken a stand for Christ in this life knows what it feels like to be excluded and made to feel like you don’t belong. Even in the town where you live, you can sometimes feel like an outsider or temporary resident. When we seek God and His Word, we find true rest.

Word Study

Sojourner – A guest, a foreigner, temporary resident. This term is used to describe someone receiving hospitality from residents.

Earth – In the land, the ground, the country or territory.

The entire globe is not in focus here. The point conveyed is being in a foreign land and having to “fit in” or find your place among people you do not know. It is the feeling that all Christians feel when living for Christ in this sin-cursed world.

Applying This Daily Bite

  1. When was the last time holy living caused you to feel like a stranger even in your own town?
  2. Do you live for Christ in a way that you stand out and people can notice a difference in you?
  3. Have you ever compromised God’s Word to fit in better?

Praying This Daily Bite

Lord, forgive me when I compromise your word to fit in with a world that hates you. Please help me trust you, trust your word, and trust in the righteousness of Christ over anything this world has to offer. Lord, please help me lean on you when I feel like a stranger in this world.
