Daily Bites Of God’s Word – Part 21 – Psalm 119:21

Just as we need daily food to sustain us physically, we also need daily food from God’s Word to sustain us spiritually.

Psalm 119:21 LSB

21 You rebuke the arrogant, the cursed,
Who stray from Your commandments.

God takes His Word seriously and expects His creatures to obey His commands. For the Christian, we have been raised to life spiritually and have both the capacity and desire to love God and obey His Word. God will not let His Word be proudly defied without consequence.

Word Study

Rebuke – to reprove, chide, or scold with a strong sense of disapproval.

Arrogant – the presumptuous, proud, insolent, defiant.

Cursed – to curse, to doom, to invoke Divine harm.

Stray – to err, stray, go away, wander, sin unintentionally by ignorance.

Here, we see that God will scold the one who even sins unintentionally. Sin is sin in God’s eyes, and He is not in the business of excusing sin, whether intentional or not. The arrogant think they can mock God by defying His command only to find out that they were woefully incorrect. We must take God’s Word seriously in our lives.

Applying This Daily Bite

  1. Have you ever acted arrogantly towards a portion of God’s Word?
  2. How was this sinful arrogance rebuked by God?
  3. After you repented, did you take God’s Word more seriously?

Praying This Daily Bite

Lord, forgive me when I have been dismissive towards Your Holy Word. Father, forgive me when I have arrogantly disobeyed Your Word. I want the Holy Spirit to convict me of sin so that I can remove it from my life. I want to live in conformity to Your Word and remain righteous and holy.
